After school dice club mangaupdates
As a huge fan of board games who still plays them pretty much weekly with my friend group, it was amazing to see board games portrayed so lovingly in anime. Plus, they’re lovingly animated, with the covers and pieces being designed very accurately with lots of bright colors. I think I’ve played almost every single one that was shown. Every single game appearing on Saikoro Club’s store shelves is a real board game, most of them European or American in origin. That brings me to the high point of this episode: the games themselves. So, even though the actual game-playing was only given a few minutes of time in the actual episode, it was quite amusing to see a real-life scenario I acted out with my friends for fun actually appearing pretty much exactly in an anime. I was in a board game club in uni, and we used to every so often play these games “sports anime style,” where we would put down cards/ roll dice slowly and dramatically while shouting out each action we took and giving each other “never give up” speeches. So, I’ve got to get one kind of irrelevant thing out of the way first. Reluctantly admitting that she enjoyed the game, Midori invites the girls to come back to the store and play more games – but only on weekends and holidays, as they are the only days when the school rules do not apply. However, when Miki gets scared by the Manager’s competitive demeanor, she teams up with her and the two manage to work together to win (although “working together” mostly just consists of Midori doing all the strategizing and Miki making all the dice rolls). Midori explains the rules but initially refuses to play, as she states that Miki and Aya are not her friends. However, the manager invites them to stay and play the board game “ Marrakech,” a strategy game which revolves around becoming a successful rug merchant in Morocco. Midori is annoyed that they are there, as they are breaking school rules that prohibit students from entering entertainment establishments after 6PM. They follow her to Saikoro (Dice) Club, a store that sells board games, run by a kind but intimidating and loud-voiced manager with Midori as his part-time employee. In the city’s entertainment district, Miki and Aya run into their class representative, Midori. Miki discovers that finding new places and views, and even pretending to be lost, can actually be quite fun. Aya, who is a new transfer student, encourages Miki to join her on a sightseeing walk in the hills outside of Kyoto. One day after class, she runs into Aya, an excitable classmate, when Aya accidentally falls off her bike into the river.
